And with that in mind, the Utah High School Activities Association each season honors the most academically gifted athletes in each sport through its academic all-state honors.
“We want to make sure academic excellence is honored,” said Roxanne Arizaga-Edge. “These are student-athletes so it’s exciting to honor those who excel the most in the classroom.”
The UHSAA has guidelines for achieving a spot on the all-state academic team.
Athletes must be seniors with a GPA no lower than 3.75 and if a student has achieved a 4.0 he or she are automatically a member of the all-academic team.
“If someone achieves a 4.0 GPA they will be on the all-state academic team, even if it means we have 100 people on that one team,” Arizaga-Edge said. “A 4.0 student-athlete needs to be honored.”
The all-state academic teams are normally honored at halftime of the state finals or at the beginning of the finals for sports like track.
It is very common to see athletes who are on the field or preparing for an individual final be among the neatly dressed other athletes as the awards are handed out.
“Our academic all-states are very often some of our very best athletes in their sport,” Arizaga-Edge said.
“We have great young men and woman and it is always exciting to see them when they are honored for excellence in the classroom along with the hard work they do in their chosen sport.”
