Three volunteers at Autumn Glow Senior Activity Center, fully certified by AARP, enjoy helping the senior community complete the annual tax filing require-ment from February through early April.
Most appointments take about an hour, with simple returns taking less, and the occasional, more complex returns taking longer.
Before arriving for their tax appointments, filers should gather their tax statements and other items to bring to their appointment.
This is a checklist of some of the kinds of information needed in preparing for their tax preparation:
• Copy of 2009 Federal & state tax return
• All 1099 statements (-INT for interest, -DIV for dividends, -R for retirement payments, -SSA for Social Security payments, -MISC for miscellaneous payments, or any other 1099 form)
• W-2 (wages, salaries, etc.)
• Any other tax related documents (information about possible deductions, sale of stocks, mutual funds, etc.)
ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT Information for 2009 tax year (even if the filer does not usually itemize deductions)
• Real estate tax payment receipt or amount paid in 2009 (real estate taxes paid in 2009 may benefit you by adding to the standard deduction)
• If a new car was purchased in 2009, a receipt or bill of sale showing the date purchased, the purchase price, and the sales tax paid (sales tax paid in 2009 may benefit you by adding to the standard deduction)
Each year, between 150 and 250 tax returns are prepared and filed at Autumn Glow Senior Activity Center.
Other senior activity centers in Davis County also provide AARP Tax-Aide services. Contact your local center for more details. To locate a tax aide location visit https://locator.aarp.org/vmis/sites/tax_aide_locator.jsp.
