The two, both Chrysler Chargers, will replace cars which have more than 90,000 miles each, according to city administrator Gary Uresk. The city had looked at purchasing two Ford Crown Victorias, but they wouldn’t be ready until January 2010.
Council member Jill Evans cast the one nay vote. She questioned whether, with Chrysler’s bankruptcy, the company could honor warranties on the vehicles. She also wanted to see the cost estimates on the Crown Victorias.
Council member Tamy Dayley, who voted to approve the purchase, asked if the cars being replaced couldn’t be used longer, given the city’s tight economic situation, but was told by council member Jon Hadlow, who works for the Bountiful Police Department, that once a car has as many miles as the two currently being used, it’s not cost-effective to keep them running.
And Uresk said funds budgeted for the two police cars will come out of the Capital Improvement Fund, which cannot be used for salaries or other operating expenses.
The city recently purchased a new motorcycle, which is being used to patrol areas and situations where the use of cars is impractical.
