The BDAC is looking for individuals and families to volunteer to help with several different aspects of the festival, which will take place August 6-8 in Bountiful. In addition to general help setting up and staffing the booths, volunteers are needed to help organize the festival and host the international dancers.
“Any skills in working with people is a plus, but a willingness to help is the most important thing,” said BDAC Executive Director Emma Dugal. “Even if something seems beyond a volunteer, we can teach them and support them through whatever it is. We just need the help.”
Probably the most prominent spot that needs the volunteer touch this year is the Assistant to the Director, who will help Dugal coordinate all aspects of Summerfest.
“Because of the economy we had to let a full-time employee go, and it’s been kind of overwhelming to the rest of us,” said Dugal. “This is to help pick up some of that.”
The international dancers also need volunteers to host them during the week of the festival, as well as a housing coordinator to make sure that no one remains homeless. This year, dancers will be coming in from China, Hungary, Mexico, Nepal, and several other countries.
“It’s really fun to meet people from all over the world and get the chance to talk to them before they actually arrive,” said Dugal. “You develop friendships, so when they arrive it’s more like a reunion.”
For Summerfest volunteers, the experience can be its own reunion.
“Once people take part in it on any level, they want to come back and do it again,” said Dugal. For more information about volunteering, call 292-0367. “It’s a very rewarding experience.”
