BOUNTIFUL – The Viewmont Vikings volleyball team had an interesting season in 2013, to say the least.
Without its head coach Melissa Brewer Р who had a child before the season startedСthe Lady Vikings finished region play with one win, but was 11-5 combined in tournaments and non-region matches.
With a new season ahead, and its old coach back, the team is looking forward to a fresh start, and it all starts with performing better than last year.
“This year we’re going to unite as a team,” Brewer said. “Everyone is competing for a spot on the team and everyone knows what they need to do to have the team succeed this season. The biggest goal is to finish matches strong and dig deep, and not get too comfortable out there.”
The season will begin with a deep senior class as seven get set to return to the floor. Its leader, said Brewer, will be Emily Madsen, a varsity player since her sophomore year and a natural leader on and off the floor.
“All of the girls look up to her and follow her lead,” Brewer said. “She’s ready to lead the team. She’s a natural leader when she gets on the floor and the team surrounds themselves around her.”
Darby Ferrell, also a senior, will serve as the team’s middle blocker and is a hard worker according to Brewer
“She’s really raw, but she works very hard and makes a lot of smart plays,” Brewer said. “She’s going to be a good piece for us.”
Brewer called the senior group “everything we need to get the season going” and that they don’t back away from a challenge.
Beyond that; however, the rest of the team will be a mix of players who don’t know who Brewer is.
“A lot of the younger players don’t know or don’t remember who I am,” she said. “Our goals have changed this year and everything they were used to doing last year is different this year.”
Despite a somewhat unknown roster, the team will feature a good amount of depth, a problem Brewer doesn’t seem to mind.
“No one ever complains about having too much depth; it’s a good thing to have,” she said. “We’ve got girls who want what’s best for the team.”
As far as goals are concerned, making it back to the state tournament is the ultimate goal, but she also knows the team will need to continue to dig deep if they want to get back to that point.
The Vikings finished 2013 with a 12-16 overall record and was 1-11 in region play. They failed to make the postseason.
