LAYTON – Police say a suspicious package caused the closure of a busy intersection in Layton Monday night.
According to a release, police said dispatchers received a call of a suspicious item, believed by the caller to be a pipe bomb.
The caller was a passerby, who observed the item on the ground near the southwest curb of Antelope Drive and Hill Field Road.
Police said officers and emergency arrived and quickly located the item, which appeared suspicious.
Police said the area was secured, and traffic was redirected on all sides of the intersection. Pedestrians were cleared from the area and surrounding businesses closed.
A bomb squad responded and inspected the item. Using additional x-ray imaging, the bomb crew determined that the item was not an explosive device, and after it was disassembled, they discovered it was some sort of mechanical device.
The intersection and businesses were opened shortly after at approximately 10:25 p.m.
Police said it did not appear that this item was constructed purposefully to represent an explosive device.
