CLEARFIELD – Former Clearfield Falcon and current Utah State University line backer Zach Vigil has been named to the 2014 Lombardi Award Watch List according to a press release sent by USU’s athletic media department.
The announcement was made Monday by the National College Football Awards Association.
Vigil will join teammate Kyler Fackrell and 11 other players from the Mountain West Conference, as well as 123 other players from around the country.
Now a senior, Vigil earned second-team all-Mountain West honors as a junior after finishing the season ranked 42nd in the nation in total tackles with 124 (47 solo, 77 assisted).
He finished the season tied for 17th among all defenders and tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Vigil also totaled 12.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks last season.
The Aggie earned second-team all-Western Athletic Conference honors in 2012, finishing with 105 total tackles (9.5 for a loss) and 5.5 sacks.
He is also one of the 40 college football players named to the College Football Performance Awards Linebacker of the Year Trophy Watch List and is a pre-season all-Mountain West selection.
The Lombardi Award, given to the best college lineman or linebacker, started in 1970. No player from Utah State University has ever won the award.
The Aggies will begin its football season on Aug. 31 with a road game against Tennessee. Its first home game will be Saturday, Sept. 6 against Idaho State.
