CENTERVILLE – Centerville Police say a picture of two kids inside of dog kennel on the back of a truck was not all it appeared to be.

Police were made aware of some children in a dog carrier in the back of a flat bed truck in the drive thru of the Centerville Zions Bank branch located at 440 W. Parrish Lane.

A Preliminary investigation showed that the photo might have spurred a big misunderstanding on the Internet.

A woman who saw the children inside the kennel snapped a picture on her cell phone and posted it to her Facebook profile, setting off hundreds of “shares” and sparking all kinds of rash comments. Most of those comments railed accused the man of abuse, while some chided the women who took the picture for not trying to save the kids.

Officers said that while it was a very concerning picture, they immediately assigned two detectives to work the incident.

It turns out the children were originally riding inside the truck cab when a man stopped in the drive through lane and entered the bank. At that time, two kids jumped out and hid inside a dog kennel strapped to the flatbed while the man was inside.

Surveillance footage showed that as soon as the man returned to the truck, the children jumped out of the kennel and rode off inside the truck cab.

“We are very grateful to the person who took this picture and reported the situation to us. Having two kids in a dog cage on a flatbed of a pickup is very alarming,” said a release from Centerville Police. “As it turned out, the kids apparently were just playing.”

Centerville police said it might not have been a good use of judgment for the driver to allow the kids to play alone while he was inside the bank, but no real harm was done.

The woman who posted the picture later removed it once she discovered the truth.
