BOUNTIFUL - It’s an easy way to let your flag fly in the coming year.
The Bountiful Breakfast Exchange Club is once again distributing flags to Bountiful area homes for major America-related holidays. This year, club members are also distributing the flags to local businesses, with many making their first appearance at shops along Main Street and 500 South this past Memorial Day.
“We’ve been doing this for several years, but we’ve been expanding it,” said Leon Thurgood, a member of the club. “It’s a really good program.”
The club is expanding the program, in part, because they donated half of their subscribers to a local scout troop who wanted to earn some money of their own.
“Our four main objectives are to promote Americanism, provide community service, promote youth activities and prevent child abuse,” said Matthew Messina, club president. “To help accomplish that, we gave them those subscribers for their fundraising projects.”
It costs $35 a year for one flag, which includes an Exchange Club member setting up the flag and taking it down. The price goes down for every flag purchased, with some businesses purchasing several. Two flags are $50 a year, five flags are $100, and 20 flags are $400. Currently, only Bountiful locations are allowed to participate in the program.
The club places the flags for every major holiday between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Since Memorial Day has passed, Thurgood said that customers could get a discount on the flags.
“We’d do it for other holidays, but the ground is too hard to put them up before Memorial Day,” he said.
The club also organizes the annual chuck wagon breakfast as part of Bountiful’s Handcart Days celebration, working along side volunteers, the Bountiful Community Youth Council, and Dick’s Market. The money raised by the breakfast is donated to the Children’s Justice Center, Safe Harbor and the Family Connection Center.
