BOUNTIFUL — Davis County is full of amazing mothers, all of whom deserve to be honored for their hard work, dedication and love.

The Davis Clipper is doing their part by celebrating 2014’s Mothers of the Year, one each from 11 participating cities. These mothers, who were nominated by loved ones, neighbors or city leaders, represent all the mothers who help make Davis County great.

“I’m really impressed by the nominations we received this year,” said Davis Clipper Managing Editor Tom Busselberg. “There are a lot of wonderful mothers out there.”

Any mother who lives in the boundaries of Davis County can be nominated, though city leaders choose whether or not their city participates. After the nominations are received, either the mayor or the Clipper staff selects a winner from each city from among those nominated.

Inside, you’ll find a profile of each of this year’s chosen mothers, all of whom have their own unique stories. Farmington mother Lorraine Thatcher is busy raising six children, three of whom have cystic fibrosis, while Bountiful mother Elma Fry was erroneously told that her husband had been shot down while fighting overseas during World War II.

Some of the mothers also offer advice on weathering the challenges of motherhood. Woods Cross mother Nicla Dolar reminds mothers that they also need to take care of themselves, while North Salt Lake mother Barbara Drinkhall reminds mothers that things will work out if you just give them time.

All winners are invited to attend a celebratory luncheon in their honor, scheduled this year for May 9 at noon at the Wight House. There, city leaders will introduce the mother that represents their city, and Clipper publisher Gail Stahle will speak on the importance of mothers to the community. The mothers also receive certificates and gift bags that include

“There is great value in motherhood,” said Stahle at last year’s event. “We salute you for what you’ve given us, for your service.”
