Editors's Musings: It’s time to spring clean, start anew

Tuesday’s temperatures hit all-time highs for the year, topping out at about 70 degrees. 

Weather like that makes us realize it’s finally spring, and that the flowers will indeed bloom and the tree leaves blossom. 

This season often signals a time for spring cleaning, whether it’s the garage or the house, what have you.

It’s also a time to start getting out, re-exploring the outdoors around us. 

The Clipper’s hiker extraordinaire, who also writes a brief column about a different trail twice a month, has now been on two or three hikes, and experienced the soreness to prove it!

Davis County is a perfect setting to get out and about. That can mean a short hike in the neighborhood, or further afield into the national forest or on to Antelope Island. 

Many of the county’s cities have an abundance of hiking areas. 

Farmington is a good example, where there re trails of all kinds, covering dozens of miles. George Chipman and the trails committee have done a great job to promote trails, even have a volunteer component that I imagine is busy right now clearing up some of the debris that has accumulated over the winter. 

The value of walking, whether it be a brisk power walk or more relaxed, has been proven. It’s something people of all ages can do, from small children to senior citizens. 

Trails, whether they be paved or gravel or whatever, can offer food for the soul as well as exercise for the feet and body. 

Spring is also a time when high school athletics turns from the gym to the track and other outdoor venues. Little league also comes to life, and families have a new way to connect Р the son or daughter on the baseball or softball field, parents cheering them on. 

 Spring is also a time where we can re-evaluate our meal strategies. Those comforting, more heavy (do I dare say hearty in this context) meals that seem so good and natural on cold evenings can be replaced.

It’s time for more salads and lighter meal fare. There are so many healthy, yet tasty options in that area. Now’s maybe the time to explore that culinary area. 

All of this activity also might spur more creative thought, more of a desire to learn new things, hone a skill that has lain dormant over the winter. 

No matter what your situation, here’s to a chance to enjoy the spring that is now all around us.
