WOODS CROSS - The new elementary school under construction in Woods Cross is now more than just a number.
With the approval of the Davis School Board, Elementary #60 will now be known as Odyssey Elementary and be led by Vicki Corwin as principal.
Kristi Frodsham, director of elementary schools for the district, presented the names to the board on Feb. 18.
Frodsham complimented Corwin as being “progressive, positive and professional,” and up to the challenge of opening a new school.
A committee formed to name the school whittled 22 suggestions down to three and surveyed parents for the final decision. Seventy-five percent of those who weighed in supported the name, Odyssey, a name associated with the poem of an epic journey written by Homer.
“Is there any more epic journey than the educational journey from five- to 12-years old?” she asked the board.
One definition said an Odyssey was a long trip involving a lot of difficulty while searching for something.
Students, she said, search for knowledge and direction, making Odyssey a perfect name.
