BOUNTIFUL – The Davis Clipper’s 2014 Spelling Bee season gets off and running Wednesday.
Elementary school-aged spellers from south Davis County will gather at Bountiful High School. Registration starts at 6:30 and the bee begins at 7 p.m.
North Davis elementary sellers will meet March 6 at Clearfield High School and the final bee is April 2, said Sidney King, a bee coordinator along with Kristin Kamerath.
She has always felt strongly about the spelling bee and has worked with the Clipper since the program’s inception well over a decade ago.
“I just felt very strongly that we needed to give our kids additional experience in spelling bees beyond their own school bees,” she said.
“I am not an excellent speller, and great appreciate spell check. However, I do love words,” King said.
“I think, to expose these young kids to a prodigious vocabulary each year, and to challenge them in their art of spelling is a wonderful thing.”
Funds collected are given to the Davis Education Foundation and used for scholarships awarded to the top students.
King expressed thanks to the teachers and parents that put on the school bees and work with the students to get them prepared for the spell offs.
