FARMINGTON - The man who tried to steal a woman’s purse in the parking lot of Smith’s Marketplace on Nov. 2 was sentenced to one year in jail.

In addition to the year in jail, Daniel Max Lopez, 32, was given three years of probation with Adult Probation and Parole, and ordered into a drug treatment program.

Second District Court Judge Thomas L. Kay gave Lopez credit for the time he has served since his arrest. The judge also suspended a one to 15 year prison sentence.

In December Lopez pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree felony robbery.

Lopez approached a woman in the store’s parking lot at 555 S. 200 West, in Bountiful, told her he had a gun and demanded that she hand over her purse. Police said she instead told him to go ahead and pull the gun. Lopez then jumped into a car.

The woman went back into the store where the store manager called 911. A police car happened to be in the area and caught up to Lopez before he left the parking lot.
