Vikings down Lancers in overtime, Braves stay unbeaten

BOUNTIFUL – It took a few extra minutes for the Viewmont Vikings boys’ basketball team to get the win over Layton last Friday, but they were able to take care of the Lancers in overtime to stay one game behind Davis for first place in Region 1.

In Region 6, the Bountiful Braves stayed unbeaten in region play with a win over Highland, and Woods Cross fell to 2-3 in region play after losing to Kearns by three points.

Vikings battle from behind, win overtime game over Layton 62-57

Trailing after three quarters in last Friday’s game against Layton, the Viewmont Vikings outscored Layton 11-6 to force the game into overtime.

From there, the Vikings were able to get the win over Layton 62-57 to remain one game behind Davis for first place in Region 1.

The Vikings had four players score more than 10 points that night, including Kelton Hirsch, Aaron Dalton, McKay Johnson and McKay Butler. 

Hirsch tied for the game-high in points with 21, and Butler and Johnson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds each in the win.

Mike Hibbert scored 21 points and had six rebounds for the Lancers in the loss.

Braves run over Rams in 59-37 win

Zac Seljaas was on fire Friday night when the Bountiful Braves took on the Highland Rams in boys’ basketball last Friday.

Scoring 26 points for the Braves, Seljaas was able to guide Bountiful to its fifth win in region play with a 59-37 dismantling over Highland.

Seljaas also pulled down eight rebounds and had four assists and four steals.

Sam Merrill and Jeff Pollard each scored 11 points for Bountiful, and Merrill pulled down seven rebounds and had seven assists.

Brandon Warr of Highland scored 13 points in the loss.

Wildcats score 30 in the fourth quarter, still lose to Kearns, 72-69

Woods Cross trailed by 19 points at the start of the fourth quarter against Kearns last Friday at Woods Cross High School.

Despite scoring 30 points in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats still lost the game 72-69 to fall to 2-3 in Region 6 play.

Garret Grant led the team with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. He also had three rebounds, assists, and steals. Jackson Pohlman scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Travis Howey scored 10 points in the loss.

Dacraeon Vines led all scorers with 26 points for the Cougars.

Games this week

Davis, Viewmont, Bountiful, and Woods Cross will all play home games Friday night. Davis will host Layton and Viewmont will host Syracuse in Region 1 play. 

Bountiful will face Cyprus, and Woods Cross will face Highland in Region 6 play.

All games tip off at 7 p.m.
