Not rated, but watch out for tons of blood and body parts
Written by Leigh Whannell and Ian Brennan
Directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnoin
Starring Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, Jack McBrayer and more
Grade: Three stars
The human body’s reaction to fear is to either scream or laugh, and “Cooties” is excellent at getting both reactions out of its audience. The movie, which follows a group of teachers as they try to survive a horde of suddenly cannibalistic elementary school children, is full of flying body parts and the kind of laughs that leave you feeling just a little bit queasy afterward. Also, I’m pretty sure I’ll never be able to make myself eat a chicken patty again.
Elijah Wood essentially does the same thing he does in every movie he’s ever been in, but the action moves quickly enough that it doesn’t matter. Rainn Wilson and Allison Pill are absolute treats, and managed to provide the movie with a few genuinely emotional moments. In the end, though, the chills win over, and as I left the theater I could have sworn I felt murderous children watching me from the darkness.
