Justin Hollis and Richard Ruiz-Aguilar were taken into custody in the store's parking lot following the incident that happened about 8 p.m., according to Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton. They were booked on suspicion of first-degree aggravated robbery.
A store employee told police that a group of males were seen fighting in the restroom.
Police say that Hollis and Ruiz-Aguilar had arranged a meeting with a 18-year-old Layton man under the false pretense of buying drugs from him. Horton said Ruiz-Aguilar told police they had bought drugs from him in the past, but he had failed to deliver them.
Horton said that Ruiz-Aguilar told them that he and Hollis did not intend to buy drugs, but were planning on collecting $35 on a previous drug deal. The pair allegedly confronted the 18-year-old and two of his friends in the restroom, where police say Ruiz-Aguilar brandished a knife and demanded money. Horton said a scuffle ensued and one of the 18-year-old's friends alerted store employees.
When police arrived everyone involved went to the store's parking lot where Hollis allegedly told the 18-year-old he had a gun and demanded money. Horton said Hollis told police he did not brandish a gun. However. a .22 caliber handgun was allegedly found in the car he was driving.
The 18-year-old and his friends left the store without giving Hollis or Ruiz-Aguilar any money. They were later located at a home in Layton. Officers did not find any drugs or any evidence the teen was dealing drugs, Horton said. However, police say Ruiz-Aguilar had a knife. No one was injured in the incident.
