LAYTON – The Layton Lancers wrestling team were a near perfect host to the other teams in attendance at the Layton Invitational wresting tournament last weekend.

Similar to Davis in its Turkey Dart tournament, the Lancers finished second in its host tournament.

They also had six wrestlers place in the top four.

The Viewmont Vikings placed ninth, and Davis Darts were 10th overall.

Box Elder won the tournament with a team score of 200 points, and the Lancers finished one point behind with 199 points.

Layton’s Braxton Ocana, at 113 pounds, was the Lancers lone individual champion. Ocana won his quarterfinal round over Alta’s Taylor Heath, beat Box Elder’s Chance Hardy in the semifinal, and won a 7-3 decision over Wasatch’s Jakob Discher in the final.

Andrew Astle finished in second place, losing only to Uintah’s Kedric Coonis in the championship match, 8-6.

Davis Marriott also finished second, dropping the final match to Wasatch’s Payton Mair via tech fall.

Landon Brown, at 195 pounds, was the final Lancer to place in the top two spots. Brown defeated Connor Taylor of Davis 3-0, pinned Drew Hale in the quarterfinals, and won a tie-breaker over Jordan High’s Clayton Moss to reach the finals.

He lost the final match 9-3 to Breckin Gunter of Box Elder.

Ninth-place Viewmont was led by 106-pounder Taylor Porath, who finished second in his weight class.

Porath beat Triston Gossett of Tooele via pin, then won a major decision 19-5 over Tanner Benedict of Layton to reach the semi-finals.

Porath followed the win by pinning Corbin Smith of Wasatch, but lost to Braiden Parker of Wasatch in the final match.

“I was proud of how Taylor wrestled,” said Vikings coach Brandon Ripplinger. “He’s a fun wrestler to watch and is extremely dangerous with the ability to score a lot of points in a match. His whole tournament was like that.”

Porath was one of four Vikings to finish in the top six. Ryan Winger (120 pounds) and David Kim (132 pounds) each finished fifth, and Peter Burgoyne placed sixth.

“Ryan looked really good,” said Ripplinger. “He has put in a lot of time over the summer, and it showed.”

Burgoyne’s finish, said Ripplinger, “was nice to see” out of the Vikings team.

“He’s a tough senior who has worked hard throughout his career,” he said, “and it’s good to have guys like him on the team for the underclassmen to look up to.”

Davis was led by senior captain Jacob Naylor, who won the 152-pound weight class with a 4-2 victory over Zach Colangelo of West High.

Wyatt Koelling, at 182 pounds, finished second, losing a 7-3 decision to West’s Will Lang in the finals. Kade Evans, at 106 pounds, finished fourth.

“It was a really good beginning of the year tournament,” said Darts coach Neal Porter. “Our youth really showed with only one senior on the team. We showed a lot of room for growth, but battled very hard.”

Woods Cross, which finished 18th, was led by 132-pounder Stone Mele, who finished third in his weight class. His only loss was to Kim in the quarterfinal round, and he beat Roy’s Connor Kirkland with a 2-1 decision in the third place match.

Bronc Marriott placed seventh in the 126-pound bracket.
