Crime Briefs: Airman dies in snowmobiling accident

WEBER COUNTY – A 22-year-old airman assigned to the 729th Air Control Squadron at Hill AFB died Sunday in a snowmobiling accident in the area of Monte Cristo.

    Airman 1st class Christopher Martinez was killed in the Sunday accident. Martinez was a ground radar journeyman with the 729th Air Control Squadron.

    Weber County Sheriff’s officials said personnel responded to an area about five miles above the snowmobiling parking lot on Highway 39 in the Dry Bread area.

A group of three airman from the base and a civilian were riding snowmobiles in the area just after 2 p.m., according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. 

They rode down a steep embankment. Three of the men made it, but the fourth didn’t. 

The three who survived found their friend who had crashed and was pinned under the snowmobile. The men alerted authorities. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our most heartfelt condolences go out to the family of this airman,” said Lt. Col. Darin P. Humiston,729th ACS commander.
