WOODS CROSS – In a wild opening week of the 4A and 5A football playoffs, the Woods Cross Wildcats were able to defend their home field, scoring six touchdowns in a 42-14 win over Box Elder.
At Davis High School, the Darts lost a tough game to Pleasant Grove 22-15, and the Braves were eliminated in the first round by Logan, 22-17.
Xequille Harry’s four-TD day helps ’Cats blowout Bees
The Woods Cross Wildcats football team was able to defend its home turf Friday night against Box Elder in the opening round of the State 4A football playoffs.
With help from every-man Xequille Harry, who accounted for three total touchdowns in the first quarter, the Wildcats were able to blow out Box Elder 42-14.
The win helped them advance into Friday’s quarterfinals.
Harry’s first touchdown was scored on defense, returning an interception for a score with 8:40 remaining in the first quarter.
Harry’s arm helped the Wildcats score their second touchdown when he found Sean Gallagher for a passing touchdown with seven minutes left in the first quarter, giving Woods Cross a 14-0 lead at the time.
Clay Kidman, the Wildcats’ quarterback, found Harry on a long pass play for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
Braxton Gunther and Kolbie Cheney scored a rushing touchdown each, sealing the game before the first half ended.
Harry scored his fourth touchdown on an 18-yard reception from Kidman in the second half to finish the scoring.
Harry’s four-touchdown afternoon was the second of the season.
Darts unable to hang onto slim lead, lose to Pleasant Grove 22-15
Davis quarterback Colton Chronister threw a touchdown pass to Abel Porter on a critical fourth down play in Friday night’s 5A playoff game against Pleasant Grove.
A two-point conversion gave the Darts a slim lead, but a big return by Pleasant Grove helped the Vikings score the go-ahead touchdown with under four minutes left in the game.
The loss for Davis was its first of the season, but eliminated them from the playoffs.
Chronister accounted for both of Davis’ touchdowns, scoring a rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to cut the Darts’ deficit to 14-7 at the time.
His pair of touchdowns gave him 23 on the season.
Braves comeback falls short in 22-17 loss to Logan
The Bountiful Braves football team made its second trip of the season to Logan High School, this time for the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals of the 4A playoffs.
After falling behind 13-7 after the first half, Logan extended the lead to 22-10 after kicking a field goal and rushing for another score.
Tanner Redding caught a touchdown pass from Tanner Lloyd in the fourth quarter to trim the lead to 24-17, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Lloyd threw for two touchdown passes in the game, both to Redding.
Woods Cross is the lone Davis County team remaining in the playoffs, and will host Salem Hills.
A kickoff time was not announced as of press time.
