FARMINGTON – Pancreatic cancer.

It’s known to be one of the deadliest cancers in the United States.

Ґ In 2013, it’s estimated more will be diagnosed with the disease, 45,220, than the number of people who live in Bountiful.

Ґ Those who will die from the disease this year are estimated at only 7,000 people less than the above number.

That’s according to information provided to the Davis County Commission by the Pancreatic Action Network, a national organization. A key Utah member of that network who shared the information is a woman from  South Jordan who lost her father to pancreatic cancer three years ago, a county official said.

County commissioners passed a resolution declaring November as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in their Tuesday meeting.

“The numbers indicated that a lot of individuals are not able to overcome this cancer. If nothing else, our proclamation would hopefully make people more aware,” said County Commissioner Louenda Downs.

“Research on pancreatic cancer is still in the infant stages as far as being able to help people overcome it,” she said.

Other information provided by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in the proclamation said:

Ґ About 220 deaths will occur in Utah this year.

Ґ The incidence and death rate for pancreatic cancer are increasing.  It’s anticipated this cancer will move from the fourth leading cause of cancer death to second place by 2020.

Ґ To spur on research, Congress passed the Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act last year. It calls on the National Cancer Institute to develop a scientific framework, strategic plans. Those would target pancreatic and other cancers.

Ґ The Pancreatic  Cancer Action Network serves patients in Davis County. For more information, visit or look for Pancreatic Action Network
