SALT LAKE CITY – For one quarter, the defense of the Bountiful Braves seemed to have found an answer to the powerful East High School offense.
But the Leopards turned a 7-0 first quarter lead into a 35-7 halftime lead as Ula Toluta’u rushed for three touchdowns and Isaac Valles threw for two touchdowns in a 49-14 win.
Bountiful’s defense was able to hold East to a single touchdown in the first quarter, allowing Toluta’u to scamper through the defense for a 47-yard touchdown in the closing seconds.
After the Leopards defense stopped Bountiful on fourth down on the Braves next drive, they wasted little time scoring their next touchdown. A 56-yard pass from Valles to Joe Tukuafu helped set up Toluta’u’s second touchdown, a five yard run that gave the Leopards a 14-0 lead.
Two more big plays by Valles gave East a 28-0 lead after he found Tukuafu for an 87-yard touchdown and Preston Curtis for an 82-yard touchdown on the Leopards next two drives.
Bountiful put a drive together late in the second quarter, capping it off with a touchdown pass from Trevor Lloyd to Sam Merrill that cut the deficit to 28 points.
However, on the next play following the kickoff, Toluta’u took the handoff from Valles and scampered 61 yards for the touchdown and a 35-7 halftime lead.
Bountiful’s only other touchdown came on a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
East remained undefeated at 9-0 with the win, and has scored at least 40 points in all but two of its games.
The Leopards will play Kearns at Kearns High School next Friday. The Braves close out the regular season against Highland at home. A win for the Braves will give them a No. 3 seed from Region 6 heading into the playoffs.
