LAYTON –The Viewmont Vikings volleyball team entered the Northridge High School gym still in search of its first Region 1 victory of the season.
Despite a strong effort to extend the match in the third set, the Vikings ended up getting swept out of the Lady Knights gym in a 3-0 sweep.
Viewmont struggled in the first set, falling behind 6-0 before scoring its first point. Amanda Varley, the team’s outside hitter, got three kills, but Viewmont only scored 12 points in a 25-12 loss.
Both the Knights and Vikings battled through the initial parts of the second set, alternating the first 25 points. After Northridge took the lead 13-12, the Knights scored the next four points for a five point lead.
The Vikings scored only four points the rest of the way, and fell behind 2-0 after a 25-16 score.
The third set was closely battled throughout, as the Vikings fought for a three point lead at 12-9 early on. Varley continued to help the Vikings stay in the match, earning a block and a trio of kills in the first 21 points. A service ace, a two-hit violation, and a pair of Knights’ errors had the Vikings out in front by four points before the Knights began their rally.
Viewmont trailed 22-21 after a short Northridge rally, but tied the match at 24-all after a Northridge error. The Knights finished the match by scoring the next two points and a 26-24 win.
Varley finished the match with 10 kills and a solo block. The Vikings as a team had 20 total kills.
Viewmont is still winless in Region 1 play.
The Vikings will face Weber at home Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
