SYRACUSE – City Council write-in candidate Randy Miller’s fight to participate in a debate has paid of.

“That’s good news for Syracuse,” the independent candidate said Tuesday. “‘Me’ has nothing to do with it.”

Teen Age Republicans sponsored the debate and initially excluded Miller, who didn’t receive enough votes in the August primary to have his name placed on the November general election ballot.

“Typically a debate is held with the top two candidates, for example Obama and Romney debated without signs of Ron Paul,” said debate sponsor Natalie Levi.

Acting City Manager Stephen Marshall said last week the city was not going to interfere with the debate because a private group was hosting it.

The candidate saw that as unfair, particularly in a non-partisan race.

“Independent just means being American, not dividing or falling into the trap of partisanship,” the civil engineer said. “I really don’t find comfort in either traditional political party.”

Levi allowed Miller to participate after City Recorder Cassie Brown said the policy needed to be changed.

“I do not believe I should be forced to change policy or to a different venue,” ” Levi said.  “That’s unconstitutional. If a write-in has all the same treatment as a candidate that passes the primary, why have a primary?”

Meanwhile, Bud Ingles dropped out of the West Bountiful mayoral race. In the primary election, he received 19.4 percent of the vote. That narrows the race to incumbent Mayor Ken Romney, who received 72.5 percent of the primary vote and write-in Cory Spilman.
