FARMINGTON — The goals Davis School District set for its approximately 68,000 students and the teachers who guide them were met in part, exceeded in others, and just shy of the mark in others.

Logan Toone, district director of assessment, research and evaluation for the district, presented the the results from last year’s assessments and enrollments in a workshop session on Tuesday.

Five focus areas included language arts, math and science, world languages, growth compared to other Utah schools and college readiness.

In language arts, third graders who tested in the lowest quartile improved 7 percent from the year ending in 2013. There was not change for the 50 percent scoring in the mid-range, and the top quartile dropped 3 percentage points.

“It is such an important marker each year for reading,” said Bryan Bowles, superintendent. “It will effect the entire rest of their learning career if they’re not able to read at that time.”

Math and science scores were tabulated for grades one through nine and while the top students showed no change, the middle group improved 1 percent and the lower quartile improved three percent over the year.

“Consistent, modest gains is what we should be looking for,” said Toone.

More students took language courses in the past year, exceeding the district goal and growth in UCAS (Utah Comprehensive Accountability System). Scores reaching 7 percent exceeded the district goal of 3 percent.

District officials have a goal of being first among Wasatch Front schools in the number of students graduating, and hope the policy adjustment allowing a district diploma that meets state requirements will make it possible for more students to reach that milestone.
