NORTH SALT LAKE — About 20 people have been displaced from their homes following a fire at an apartment complex at 55 W. Center Street in North Salt Lake.

The fire was called in at 5:37 a.m., said South Davis Metro Agency Fire Chief Jeff Bassett. It damaged all 12 units of the  building in the complex. Two of the units were seriously damaged by fire, four others were damaged by water and smoke and the other six were damaged by smoke.

The Red Cross was on scene Tuesday morning, working to find the displaced residents homes, possibly in vacant apartments within the complex, Bassett said.

The fire was detected by an on-duty Davis County Sheriff’s deputy, who was at the North Salt Lake city offices across the street. He notified the fire department and helped evacuate people, Bassett said. He suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The most damaged units were on the top floor of the building.

“There was a large amount of flames,” Bassett said, making it difficult for crews to get in and fight the blaze. They were able to use a ladder truck to fight the fire from above.

“Once we used the ladder truck, we were able to knock it down quickly,” Bassett said.

Bassett estimated damage at about $150,000. Investigators were on the scene Tuesday morning to determine a cause, but Bassett said it appears the fire started on the outside of the units.

SDMFA crews have gone out on a number of structure fires recently, but this one is significant because they had to evacuate people, something they don’t have to do very often, Bassett said.
