LAYTON — Ordinary wooden pallets are being transformed into one-of-a-kind race cars for the fifth annual PARC Pallet Grand Prix on Friday.

Though the cars have no engines and no brakes, they will race across the parking lot north of Layton Hills Mall thanks to people power.

The race is held to bring attention to the capabilities of people with disabilities. PARC, which stands for Pioneer Adult Rehabilitation Center, helps match people with disabilities to jobs.

Four high schools and 17 businesses will participate this year, according to Brandi Kirksey, marketing specialist for PARC.

“We’re super excited,” she said. “It grew quite a bit – it’s going to be lots of fun.”

Races begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at the north parking lot of the mall. Local restaurants will offer samples after the races. There is no charge for attending the race.
