KAYSVILLE – Davis’ opening match of the season may not have been what coach Souli Phongsavath was looking for.
After the Lady Darts picked up the 1-0 overtime win over Woods Cross, Phongsavath approached the team with a simple message before Thursday's match: attack early.
Davis responded in kind by scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of Thursday’s match against Bountiful, and added three more goals in the second half to complete the 5-0 win.
“I didn’t want them to play another 90-minute game,” he said. “We wanted to start quickly and take our chances early. It worked because we were able to score two goals about two minutes apart. It changed the whole game.”
Madi Garlock and Ireland Dunn each scored a goal in the first half to give the Darts a 2-0 lead. Garlock’s came in the fifth minute and Dunn’s in the seventh minute. Bountiful had its chances to reduce the deficit; however, strong play at the net by Sara Beecher kept the Braves off the scoreboard.
“We’re just trying to build something as a team,” said Phongsavath. “Win or lose, we just want to see what we have and what we need to work on.”
Dunn made the score 3-0 for Davis after kicking in her second goal of the game in the 49th minute. Three minutes later, Mikayla Colohan scored her first goal of the season to give the Darts a four-goal advantage.
Garlock added her second goal of the game in the 59th minute to end the scoring.
The Darts win gives them a 2-0 record. Bountiful falls to 0-1-1 after tying its opening match against Park City Tuesday. The Darts will host Logan on Tuesday; Bountiful will already open region play with a home match against Kearns the same day.
Both games kick off at 3:30 p.m.
