The school’s new summer theater program will bring “Once on This Island Jr.” to the stage on Aug. 8-10 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Bountiful High amphitheater. The musical, which ran on Broadway on the early 1990s, is based off of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid.”
“I’m really drawn to shows not many people have seen,” said director Megan Call. “I wanted to do something that would be fun and music-packed, and this show has a really summery feel to it.”
The show, which is set on a tropical island, tells the story of an ill-fated love affair between a peasant girl and a rich young man. There are several magical elements to the story, including transformation and the involvement of gods and goddesses.
The production, which involves students in 6th through 12th grade, began as a way to give younger students a taste of high school theater.
“It’s a fun way for them to get involved,” said Call. “And the program can always use the fundraising opportunity.”
Though Call is best known locally as the choreographer for Bountiful High’s regular productions, she’s directed shows at Creative Arts Academy.
“It’s been fun to put on a different hat,” she said. “I think it’s really been a good learning experience for everyone.”
