FARMINGTON — Pre-registration ends Aug. 9 for the ninth annual Davis County Walks 5K-Walk/Run, to be held at the Legacy Events Center in Farmington.

The cost is $20 for those under age 60 who register by Aug. 9. The event is Aug. 17 and registration that day will take place from 6:30-7:15 a.m. for $25.

“We invite everyone to take the first step to better health and participate in the Davis County Walks 5K event,” said Lewis Garrett, Davis County Health Department director.

“There are many benefits to walking. Research shows a 30-40 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease and a 50 percent reduction in the risk of premature death,” he said.

The walk/run was started by the old Davis County Department of Aging, and what is now the Senior Services Division of the health department is still very involved.

“Walking is a great physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk for chronic disease including cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” said Sally Kershisnik, division director.

Each participant will receive a moisture-wicking T-shirt and refreshments at the finish line.

There are various categories including overall and senior for males and females, said Jessica Hardcastle, event organizer. Cash prizes will be awarded to top finishers in each category.

There will also be drawings for other prizes to include all 5K participants.

A Kids Mud Race will start at 9 a.m. Younger children who complete the specially marked, non-competitive mud course will receive a participation prize. The event is free but pre-registration is required, Hardcastle said.

“Have the kids wear the grubbiest clothes because they are going to get muddy and wet,” she said.

They should also bring a towel because firefighters will help clean participants off after the race.

Registration forms may be picked up at the health department at 22 S. State Street in Clearfield, or you can register online at the Davis County Walks website at For more information, call 801-525-5050.
