BOUNTIFUL – The permit for the Bountiful Lions Gun Range is up for renewal at the end of 2013 and the U.S. Forest Service is seeking public comment on the Bountiful Lions Club’s application to renew the permit.

The range has operated on national Forest Service land since 1959 under a special use permit, according to a Forest Service press release.

The club is seeking a 20-year renewal term of its permit. No new construction or changes to the existing permit are proposed.

The club’s application is one of a number of proposals being considered as part of an environmental analysis process by the Forest Service statewide.

Those who would like to comment on the application should contact Polly Popola at 801-733-2686, or email

The range is open to the public.

The gun range is noisy and echoes all over the mountainside. I have long felt it should not be in an area of homes. There are still out of the way places that it could be moved to, and should be in my opinion. There aren't many that use it anymore and it should be in an area where it is not affecting others with its noise. Thank you for allowing me to give an opinion that I have had for a long time.

The gun range has been in place since 1959. At the time there were no homes that far up the mountainside. It is the homes that have moved in on the gun range, not the other way around.

The Bountiful Lions Shooting Range is open to the general public and most importantly provides a safe, clean, monitored environment for shooters. Drive above the “B” and you’ll easily recognize places where shooters have shot toward the valley and left their trash. I for one am thankful the range is a short drive, inexpensive and provides a safe environment for my family and friends to shoot.
