At the summit of Big Mountain Pass, the trail starts by the green communications building and climbs into aspens. Most trails go up to your destination, then down on your return, but not this hike. Get ready for a lot of up and down. At a quarter mile, you reach the ridgeline with great views of Parleys Canyon and the barren hilltop of Bald Mountain to the South. After the view, the trail drops into a large meadow. After crossing the meadow, the trail takes you into scrub oaks and down to the drainage saddle. The drainage is the lowest point on the trail, at 2.3 miles. Get ready for a climb to reach Bald Mountain. When the trail enters a maple grove, it smooths out. You leave the maples for a sagebrush and grass-covered hillside. Just up the hill is Bald Mountain. There is no shade on top, but the views are spectacular!
