1921-2013

Berniece McEntire Dunford passed away at her home on May 27, 2013. Berniece was born to Horace and Ethel McEntire on October 7, 1921 in Ogden, Utah. She grew up in Ogden through the difficult years of the depression as one of eight children. Though times were financially austere, she developed great tenacity and imagination.

She graduated Weber State College and was the leader of the Woman’s Athletic Organization, named the Woman Athlete of the Year. She met her husband, William S. Dunford on a blind date. They married January 4, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple and have been devoted to each other for over 70 years. After WWII they attended BYU, then the University of Maryland where Bill earned his doctorate in medicine. His medical training took them to Baltimore, Seattle, Portland, and Lexington, Kentucky, settling in Bountiful. She served in LDS church leadership positions: as Relief Society President three times and the Stake Young Woman’s President.

She had a sparkling personality and an amazing memory for names, numbers, details, and a gift of making fast friends wherever she went. She had a keen intellect and adventurous spirit. She loved the great outdoors and learned to ride a motorcycle, maintaining her motorcycle endorsement until her death at the age of 91. Adventures took them to Alaska, Africa, Europe, and the back roads of the West. She and Bill were called to two “medical” missions for the LDS church, in Tonga and Nauvoo.

She is survived by her husband Bill, four children: Kris (Clyde Eggett) Cedar City, Nancy (Bob Tibbets) Mesquite, NV, Nick (Rebekah) Springville, Paul (Ruby) Syracuse, 12 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Her surviving siblings include: Robert (Victoria), Glen (Pat), Diann (Lynn) Roberts, Janice Ingalls. She is preceded in death by siblings Kenneth and Don McEntire, and Darlene Ives, and two grandsons, Kevin and Trevour Dunford.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Cedarview Chapel, 320 S. 1925 West, Cedar City, with a viewing beginning at 11 a.m. There was a graveside service prior to the burial in the Lakeview Memorial Estates, Bountiful, on Monday June 3, 2013 at 1 p.m. Online condolences can be sent to www.sumortuary.com.

The family wishes to thank her many friends for their love and support of Bill and Berniece over the last few years.
