The Davis County Jr. Miss Scholarship program, which is currently seeking applicants for their 2009 competition, is looking to give that chance to as many girls as they can. Open to all girls who are the correct age to be juniors in high school, the program aims to combine potential scholarship money with chances for self-growth.
“Jr. Miss is a place where young women can truly learn to be their best, work hard, achieve their goals, and gain skills to help them on their way towards a bright future,” said Derena Bell, one of the organizers of the event. “I love watching them learn to believe in themselves.”
The program, which offers anywhere from $800-$1000 in scholarships at the county level all the way up to $50,000 or more at nationals, evaluates girls in five areas— interview, scholarship, self-expression, fitness and talent.
“It’s a self-confidence builder,” said Bell. “Girls come in and think they can’t do the fitness routine, but in the time I’ve been there every girl has been able to do it.”
While working with Jr. Miss, girls study and try to live by the Be Your Best Self Outreach Program, which teaches the importance of education, moral principles, community service, and making and achieving goals.
“It’s a character building and refining program,” said Bell. “It teaches all the things that help girls become young women.”
Applications for the Junior Miss program will be accepted no later than April 25, and positions will be filled in order of applications received. The pageant itself will be held June 19 and 20. For more information, please contact Barrie Giles at 801-295-0350 or Bell at 801-299-0977.
