BOUNTIFUL - The Bountiful Lady Braves softball team continued their winning streak by crushing Westlake 14-1 in the opening round of the 4A softball playoffs.
Also advancing through the winner’s bracket was Davis, which shut out the Kearns Cougars 12-0 in the 5A playoffs.
Both Woods Cross and Viewmont were downed in tough, close games. The Lady Wildcats lost 3-1 to Herriman and the Lady Vikings lost to Syracuse 5-4.
Lady Braves advance after 14-1 beat down
Bountiful’s Belle Stoddard completely silenced the Westlake Thunder offense, allowing only a single run on four hits and striking out 10 batters as the Lady Braves scored 14 runs en route to an easy victory.
Kristi DuBois had the only extra base hit for Bountiful, a double, and the Lady Braves scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open.
For Stoddard, the win was her 22nd of the season and 49th of her high school career.
Davis scores eight in the third, down Kearns 12-0
Cheyne Moffitt hit a home run at the plate and Cheyenne Norton allowed one hit in five innings as the Davis Lady Darts scored eight runs in the third inning to power past the Lady Cougars 12-0 in the opening round of the 5A state playoffs.
Moffitt’s home run was one of four extra base hits for Davis, which scattered 14 hits overall. Norton’s win was her 14th of the season.
Lady Wildcats dropped in the opening round
The Woods Cross softball team was held scoreless through the first six innings, and its seventh inning rally fell short as the Lady Wildcats lost to Herriman 3-1 in Tuesday’s opening round.
Madison Sorenson had the best day at the plate for Woods Cross, collecting two of the team’s five hits as she doubled and tripled.
Manni Johnson tripled in the loss as well, and Hanalee Robinson took the loss inside the circle.
Viewmont downed in first round by Syracuse
The Region 2 champion Lady Vikings had a rough first round game against Syracuse Tuesday, dropping a 5-4 game after failing to score the tying run in the seventh inning.
Up 3-1 entering the fourth inning, Viewmont allowed Syracuse to score three times in order to take the lead for good. The Lady Titans added a run in the seventh, which proved to be just enough to squeeze out the victory.
Caitlyn Larsen, Emily Street and Staci Payne all hit doubles for the Lady Vikings. Eliza Thornley took the loss inside the circle. Scores and statistics were provided by the respective teams.
Thursday will see all four teams back on the softball field as Bountiful hosts Mountain Crest and Davis hosts Copper Hills in the winner’s bracket.
In the one-loss bracket, Woods Cross will travel to Bonneville High School to battle the Lakers and Viewmont will host Brighton.
All games will start at 4 p.m.
