LAYTON — The building that housed a Wonder Bread/Hostess outlet store for decades will re-open later this month under a new name.
Franz Bakery is due to re-open the location at 1714 N. Main later this month, company spokesperson Jessica Larson said Tuesday. The company is based on Portland, Ore.
Crews were working on the exterior of the building late Tuesday morning.
The former Bountiful Wonder Bread/Hostess store was not part of the transaction.
Franz Bakery’s $30.9 million bid to purchase several Hostess bakeries, including the Wonder Bakery in Salt Lake City, was approved in April.
About 65 employees are expected to work at the Salt Lake facility.
A press release issued on April 19 said the company hoped to begin production next Monday.
The Franz product line includes breads, buns, bagels, English muffins, rolls, pastries and cookies. Grandma Emilie’s breads will also be available, the press release said.
“Layton is excited that the old Hostess store is re-opening,” said Kent Andersen, Layton City Economic Development Specialist.
It’s particularly good because the store is already designed for use as a bakery, he said. That should mean far less work to prepare it for re-opening.
Andersen said a business license had been issued for the business but he had no other details.
Franz Bakery has stores and operations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Northern California and Montana. It is an independent, family-owned bakery that opened 107 years ago.
