BOUNTIFUL — The Viewmont Vikings baseball team took a step toward the state 5A tournament last week by sweeping a tough Hunter team.

Bountiful took the last game of the series against Woods Cross, and Davis improved on its chances of winning the Region 1 crown with a victory.

Vikings sweep Hunter, remain in playoff hunt.

Viewmont 7, Hunter 1

In a 12-inning classic, Hunter’s Austin Bean kept the Vikings off balance for 10 full innings. Both teams used excellent pitching and solid defense in a drama-filled thriller.

Viewmont shortstop Will Andres turned in the key defense play in the bottom of the seventh when Hunter had the winning run on third. Andres did it by backhanding a hard grounder in the hole to get the final out and send the game to extra innings.

Viewmont pitchers Brendan Jensen and Matt Burt matched Bean’s efforts, with Burt pitching seven and one-third scoreless innings to earn the win.

Viewmont 8, Hunter 1

Parker Taggart led the Vikings on the mound by pitching a complete game, and went 4-for-4 with two triples. Sophomore Tyler Erickson also had four hits for the Vikings.

Viewmont 9, Kearns 0

Viewmont pitcher Isaac Evans was at his best throwing a no-hitter to lead the Vikings to the series sweep. Viewmont scored all the runs they needed in the first inning when Tyler Erickson walked, Nate Remington singled and Parker Taggart continued his hot-hitting by singling to score both runners.

Justin Boucher had three hits for the Vikings, but the day was all Evans, who only allowed two walks and struck out nine on his way to a no-hitter gem.

Braves down Wildcats in series finale, 6-1

Ricky Medrano picked up the win for the Braves as Bountiful beat Woods Cross in the series finale Friday.

The win allowed Bountiful to clinch a spot in the 4A baseball playoffs.

Medrano allowed only two hits and a run, but the Braves scored six runs against the Wildcats.

Ryan Curtis and Tevin Byington hit a double and a triple, respectively, for Bountiful. Quentin Foutz took the loss for Woods Cross.

A worst case scenario would have the Wildcats in the 4A playoffs as either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed.

Darts beat Lancers 6-3, control destiny in Region 1

Zac Fuller pitched a complete game for Davis in the season finale against Layton, allowing three runs but striking out 12 batters as the Darts won 6-3 last Thursday.

The win allowed Davis to win the Region 1 title and claim a No. 1 seeding heading into next week’s state 5A tournament.

Jackson Peacock and Kody Day each hit doubles for Davis, which scored three runs in the fifth inning to break the game open.

Scores and statistics were provided by the respective teams.
