CENTERVILLE — A man wanted for assault in Virginia is in the Davis County Jail on multiple charges after he led police on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning.

Garriete Lopez, 33, was booked on multiple charges including vehicle burglary, reckless driving, theft, giving false information to a law enforcement officer and reckless endangerment after the incident that began shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

An officer on patrol near 400 West and 1400 North noticed an SUV traveling through the neighborhood with no headlights and on the wrong side of the road, according to Centerville Police Chief Neal Worsley.

When the SUV was pulled over, the officer noticed a 14-year-old girl and an infant in the car. The infant was not in a car seat and the officer spoke to Lopez for a minute about that, Worsley said.

The man had no identification and there was no information on the name Lopez gave the officer, so he called for backup, Worsley said.

As officers again approached the car, Lopez allegedly drove off heading south on 400 West, then turning west on Parrish Lane. Worsley said Lopez still didn’t have the vehicle’s headlights on.

Lopez allegedly led officers onto Legacy Parkway going between 65 and 70 mph, but at about 500 South “he starts slowing down like he’s running out of gas and moves over to the break-down lane going 25 to 30 mph,” Worsley said. At mile marker 1 on the Legacy Parkway he ran out of gas.

Lopez was taken into custody and officers identified him from information given to them by the teenaged girl. The girl is Lopez’s stepdaughter and the male infant in the vehicle is his son, Worsley said.

Officers recovered property from at least one theft in the area, Worsley said.

The children are in the custody of their grandmother, Worsley said.
