KAYSVILLE — A Dart has shot straight to the top of national rankings.

Thanks to her performance at last weekend’s Arcadia Invitational in California, Davis High runner Shea Martinez is ranked first in the nation on the 800-meter race. Her time of 2:09.26 is .04 seconds faster than the NO. 2 ranked runner, a record also set at the Arcadia Invitational.

“It was pretty fun for her,” said coach Corbin Talley. “Her main focus has always been on the 800-meter and 1600-meter races.”

Martinez also won first place in the invited heat on the 3200-meter race, coming in with a time of 4:52.39. The time secured her an eighth place ranking nationally, and beat her previous best of 4:56.

According to Talley, Martinez has gone to Arcadia planning to focus only on the 3200-meter race, which was an hour before the 800-meter event.

“We weren’t sure whether she should do the 800-meter, but she decided she felt pretty good,” he said.

Teammate Taylor Cox won the seeded heat of the 3200-meter run with a time of 4:56.04, meaning that she’s now ranked 13th in the U.S.

“Her previous best was a time of 5:08,” said Talley. “We’re really excited about that one.”

Both girls were part of the 4x800 meter relay team that took first at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York in March.

Martinez is also a two-time state champion in the 800- and 1600-meter events.

Next up for the team is the Grizzly Invitational in Logan on April 13, and the Davis Invitational on April 27.
