FRUIT HEIGHTS — Fruit Heights residents will soon have the option of adding curb-side recycling to their garbage collection service, after a decision by the city council last week.

Information on the program Р what is permitted in recycling cans and what is not Р will be distributed to city residents by a Girl Scout troop, according to Brandon Green, city manager.

Cost of the program depends on participation, said Green, “but it won’t be any higher than $4 a month.”

While the city already offers green-waste recycling, city leaders have debated offering general recycling for 14 months.

“I’m not sure how much more information we need,” said Councilman Don Carroll, when a survey on recycling was proposed at the last council meeting. “We keep pushing it away and taking more and more time ... I don’t see the benefits of delaying it any further.”

City leaders agreed to use Robinson Waste, the city’s garbage hauler, to provide the cans and pick-up service.

The only additional expense to the city is for staff time related to educating residents on the new program, said Green.

Josh Hughes, who runs a private recycling service that already serves the area, addressed the council and was assured he could continue to offer his service to Fruit Heights residents. Mountain West Recycling charges $10 per month for curbside recycling.

City leaders hope for 60 percent participation in the program the city will be offering, said Green.

“If it’s under 60 percent then the city will reconsider,” he said.
