BOUNTIFUL — As many as 27 percent of children living in areas of Davis County experience food hardship,  Bountiful Community Food Pantry officials say.

To help alleviate child hunger, Washington Elementary School, 340 W. 650 South, in Bountiful, is hosting a community discussion on the problem of child hunger on March 4 at 3 p.m. Utahns Against Hunger and the Davis School District will have representatives sharing information on the problem and how communities can take action to reduce it.

The Bountiful Community Food Pantry helps fight child hunger through its regular food distribution at the pantry six days a week. Through this distribution, pantry officials say they help over 1,500 individuals a month, 30 percent of whom are children.

Beginning March 8, the pantry will add another program to fight child hunger. Called Pantry Packs, the program will offer child-friendly food for at-risk children who attend the three Title 1 schools in south Davis County.

Each Friday, the children who will be identified by school administrators and teachers, will be given a small bag of food to take home and eat over the weekend when they do not have access to the breakfast and lunch that is available at school.

The team that will be collecting food and funds for this program as well as assembling the Pantry Packs is primarily comprised of high school students from Bountiful High School, Viewmont High School and Woods Cross High School who want to give back to their community and help hungry children.

Those who are interested can help by donating child-friendly food through March 4 at the three high schools, the Bountiful Food Pantry and other locations that are listed on bountifulfoodpantry.org.

Financial donations for Pantry Packs are also being requested either directly to the Bountiful Community Food Pantry or through the Love Utah Give Utah statewide online giving platform through March 22.

The Community Foundation of Utah is coordinating the Love Utah Give Utah effort to help Utah’s nonprofit organizations raise as much money as possible in 24 hours.К

Go to loveutgiveut.org and select the Bountiful Food Pantry for more information and to donate to Pantry Packs.
