OGDEN — Engineering a prosthetic hand, constructing a coin flipper and designing an electric yo-yo are a few of the projects on tap for 40 parent-daughter teams at an engineering event on Saturday at Weber State University in Ogden.
“Parent-Daughter Engineering Day” will take place on Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning on campus.
The event is held to introduce junior high girls to careers in engineering.
“Women are underrepresented in many science and engineering occupations,” said Rainie Ingram, director of WSU’s Science, Technology, Engineering Programs (STEP). “Our focus is to get girls excited about engineering and technology through hands-on activities that get them thinking like engineers, while having fun.”
Successful female engineers and representatives from WSU’s Collegiate Society of Women Engineers will work with the girls at the event. A session is also planned for parents, called “Growing Your Own Engineer.”
