Letter: Don’t trust Holly Refinery to expand operations

My family just had dinner in Sugarhouse. We came back to West Bountiful where we live one block north of Holly Refinery. As usual, the smog and pollution around this area is more so than anywhere else in the valley that we traveled through tonight. And Holly is asking permission for increased production and increased trucks hauling it all in.

They say “about 100 trucks a day”. It is awful to breathe around here as it is, and now, they want to make it more awful. I am coughing and gunked up so bad I went to the doctor. I had two eye infections, both eyes infected! The doctor said it was from the pollution! Downright disgusting, right?

Do not allow Holly Refinery to contribute to this mess! I have lived in Utah for 53 years. I have never seen it so bad. Holly has not ever been honest with their neighbors. Its pollution over the years has been evident in our neighborhood, from kids playing in the dirt and water that resulted in rashes to finding out that the dirt and water were contaminated.

Holly bought the house and property next door and then demolished everything on it. Holly owns a number of homes on our street now. And the latest, a ruptured tanked spewing oil and contaminates all over many neighborhoods, while Holly saying it wasn’t “anything”, but “if any of this spray got on your fruits or vegetables, throw them away”!

And how about a neighbor with cancer? I am so worried about the future of my grandchildren who live in the south Davis area and the air that they breathe. I worry about them even more when they come to visit me in West Bountiful. Even entertaining the thought of allowing Holly to expand, with its guarantee of “less pollution”, absolutely makes no sense, and is absolutely the wrong thing to do.

Listen to the doctors of our communities; they know what they are talking about! You can’t trust Holly.

Janet Schieving,

West Bountiful
