Viewmont grapplers pull ahead at state

The Viewmont wrestling team widened its lead at the state 5A wrestling tournament. The Vikings have five wrestlers headed to tomorrow finals and own first place with 171 points. Fremont is in second with 117.5 followed by Plesant Grove with 111.5 and Davis at 105.5.

The following Vikings will compete in the finals:

Mike Winger (125). Winger edged Davis' Todd Smoot, 2-1, in overtime in the semi-finals. Winger will face Matt Finger of Fremont.

At 130, Viewmont's Josh Smoot will face Bingham's Kade Moss.

Davis High's Braiden Hart and Viewmont's Ikeru Abe will meet in the finals at 140. Abe beat Hart in the Region 1 finals 12-7 after trailing going into the final round, 3-2.

At 145, Danner Kjar will face Pleasant Grove's Clint Jacob.

Pleasant Grove and Viewmont face each other again at 152 with Viewmont's Mitch Rasmussen and PG's Alex Nicholes.

Both Viewmont and Davis have wrestlers battling for third place.

In 4A, Bountiful's Wade Young (160) and Ben Lemon (215) are still wrestling and already earned all-state honors.

The finals take place Friday night at 7 p.m. at Utah Valley University.
