Free music lectures at Golden Years

Lewis Phelps and his friends are hosting a free lecture series called “America’s Vernacular Songs,” at the Golden Years Senior Activity Center in Bountiful (726 South 100 East). The first of the four free lectures will begin Thursday, Jan. 19 from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. The lectures will run consecutively on Thursdays with the last lecture being held on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Topics include:

• Jan. 19: “Ladies of Vaude- ville” – featuring RaeLynn Wheeler, soprano

• Jan. 26: “Songs of Irving Berlin” – featuring Tammy Harris, soprano

• Feb. 2: “Our Irish Heritage”– featuring Gary Whipple, tenor

• Feb. 9: “Songs of Kern, Porter, Gershwin, and others” – featuring Mary Ann Dresher, mezzo

Lew Phelps was an Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, and has taught part-time for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Utah for the past several years. His friends are local singers.
