KAYSVILLE -- Three individuals were honored last week by North Davis Chamber of Commerce for promoting business prosperity and enhancing the quality of life in Davis County.
Mike Bouwhuis and Julie Snowball, former chairs of the chamber's board of directors; and Julie Kenley, owner of Kenley Ford in Layton, were honored when they received the first "Legacy Awards." The awards were presented at the chamber's annual banquet at DATC on Jan. 6.
Throughout the year, the North Davis Chamber plans to recognize outstanding achievement by presenting Legacy Awards to various individuals.
"The award is symbolic in many ways. Just like the pioneers from long ago planted roots that we benefit from today, the winners of the awards have provided us with a better environment and allowed us to have a better life," said Chamber President Chris Dallin.
"People roll up their sleeves, get work done, and benefit all. By doing this they breathe life into the American dream.
"That's why we recognize their profound efforts. In this age of growth and prosperity, we always need to go back to our roots," Dallin said.
Toward the end of the evening Board Chair Mike Bouwhuis handed the gavel to incoming chair Martin Eliason.
Bogey's Country Garden was honored as "Business of the Year." Bouwhuis was selected "Total Citizen of the Year," and Victoria Wise was named "Welcome Neighbor -- Small Business of the Year."
North Davis Chamber of Commerce experienced tremendous growth throughout the year with new members signing up nearly every day.
The chamber accomplished many of its goals include the development of a legislative affairs committee to voice the chamber's concerns to state legislators. Eighty-five percent of the bills the chamber supported were passed.
The chamber also supports building a county conference center in Layton, and continues its support for development of industrial parks and commerce centers.
During 1999 the chamber developed a strong relationship with South Davis Chamber with joint committees including legislative affairs, tourism, economic development and Davis County Business Showcase.
Goals for the Year 2000 include a "Partnership Summit" with the South Davis Chamber, county commissioners, private enterprise leaders, mayors and city representatives; explore further partnerships with South Davis Chamber and establish the "Top of Utah Chamber Association" in conjunction with the other chambers to the north; and create a professional interactive web-site including a hub site for Davis County businesses, services and government.
At the banquet last week, the chamber unveiled its 2000 Metro Guide and its web site.
