DAVIS COUNTY -- Absolutely no swimsuits are involved. The Davis County Jr. Miss Scholarship program, open to young women of the correct age to be juniors in high school, is seeking applicants for their 2007 competition.

Information meetings will be held March 6 at the Layton High cafeteria, March 7, in the Davis High commons, and March 8 at the Woods Cross High cafeteria, all at 3:30 p.m. Applications will be available at all meetings.

"The competition is such a self-confidence builder," said Derena Bell, the co-director for this year's program. "Girls come in and think they can't do the fitness routine, but in the more than two years I've been there every girl has been able to do it."

While working with Jr. Miss, girls study and try to live by the Be Your Best Self Outreach Program, which teaches the importance of education, moral principles, community service, and making and achieving goals.

"It's a character building and refining program," said Bell. "It teaches all the things that help girls become young women."

The Davis County competition, recently named the best overall Jr. Miss program in the state, will be held June 6 and 7 at Woods Cross High. The competition awards cash scholarships based on five areas: scholarship, talent, poise, fitness and interview skills.

Scholarship winners can also go on to the state and national levels of Jr. Miss.

For more information, please contact Bell at 299-0977 or her co-director Barrie Giles at 295-0350. Applications are due March 17.
