Various lists of genea-logical Web sites can be found online as well as in genealogy magazines. The lists are usually "the best" for this subject or that, or "the best on the Internet," or "the best places for beginners," and so forth. Earlier this year, Family Tree Magazine published a list of "365 Sites to See," a year's worth of free Web sites for genealogists.

From that list I decided I'd visit a few and make an A to Z list that might meet a variety of needs for readers of this column. I've visited each one of these, so as of the date I wrote this, each should be at the address listed.

A -- America from the Great Depression to WWII. lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/

fsowhome.html

Photographs, more than 160,000 of them, covering 1935-1945 of Americans in every part of the nation from the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information collection.

B -- Bible Records Online. biblerecords.com

Site steadily growing since being established 26 March 2001; now with 1060 Bibles and 3,263 different surnames.

C -- City Directories of the USA. uscitydirectories.com. An attempt to identify all printed, microfilmed, and online directories, and their repositories, for the United States.

D-- Dead Fred. deadfred.

com

The Archive contains 11,363 surnames and 45,356 records. As of my visit, 358 individuals had been reunited with family by searching for ancestors at DeadFred.com!

E -- EyeWitness to History.

www.eyewitnesstohistory.com

Your ringside seat to history, from the ancient world to the present. History through the eyes of those who lived it.

F -- Federation of East European Family History Societies.

feefhs.org

Organized in 1992 as an umbrella organization that promotes family research in eastern and central Europe without any ethnic, religious, or social distinctions. Provides a forum for individuals and organizations focused on a single country or group of people to exchange information and be updated on developments in the field.

G -- Genealogical Misconceptions. rootdig.com/adn/misconcep-tions.html

Kind of a rough list of genealogical "urban legends," urging examination of family stories such as descending from one of "three brothers" who emigrated to the New World.

H -- Heirlooms Lost.

heirloomslost.com

More than 1600 items and 4400 surnames in their database. You may post to the want list or sale/show list as many times as you want without charge.

I -- International Soundex Reunion Registry. isrr.net

A mutual consent reunion registry for persons desiring a reunion with next-of-kin, serving the needs of family members who have been separated from each other by adoption, divorce, foster care institutional care, abandonment, etc.

J -- Just Genealogy.

justgen.com

An active genealogy chat where all with a serious interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas and the making of friendships.

K -- Korean War Database koreanwar.org/html/korean_

war_databases.html

The main file, the Korean War Project Uniform Casualty File, is a combination of all available government and private databases of casualties from the Korean War.

L -- Last Name Meanings. last-names.net

Find the ethnic origin and meaning of last names. The surname dictionary and genealogy helps include names of Irish, German, English, French, Italian, and Jewish descent.

Oops, we're out of space. We'll cover from M to Z in my next column.
