The Women's Opportunity Award was established in 1972 to aid a mature woman to enter or re-enter the job market, or to further her skills, training and to upgrade her employment status.
Eligibility includes: an applicant who has characteristics of maturity in that she is motivated to improve her skills and qualifications and can accept responsibility; is the head of her household or has a family financially dependent on her; has a specific educational need; shows financial need; and is entering a vocation or technical training program or is completing an undergraduate degree. Soroptimist immediate families and previous award winners are not eligible.
The Women's Opportunity Award begins on the club level with a cash award depending on the club's resources. Then the club winner becomes eligible for an additional regional-level award. One individual regional winner will also be selected for a $15,000 payout.
Last year, the club's top winner and five runners-up received a total of $3,250 in cash awards to be used in any way to help with their educational expenses such as childcare, transportation, rent or tuition.
Application deadline for this year's award is Jan. 15, 2007. For more information and applications, contact Joy French at 292-3033 or 292-7226.
