KAYSVILLE -- At the DATC this weekend Cordie Weed of Bountiful was given an Example of Courage Award for her fortitude despite a devastating genetic disorder. Weed has Usher Syndrome, a genetic disorder resulting in hearing loss and progressive loss of vision.

She serves on many committees for the blind and is also the coordinator in lobbying for the blind. She often speaks at schools on overcoming disabilities and living as a deaf and blind person.

Hill Air Force Base was also honored during the banquet with a 2006 Example of Courage Award for actively recruiting and hiring new employees with disabilities as well as providing promotion and advancement opportunities for current employees with disabilities.

The awards were created by a non-profit organization called the Examples of Courage Foundation. The foundation provides educational experiences to members of the community who have disabilities.

The keynote speaker for the evening was John Porter, CEO of Focus Communications. The master of ceremonies was Erica Hansen from KOSY 106.5.

The foundation held the dinner to raise funds for scholarship for people with disabilities.

The Examples of Courage foundation was set up to honor the memory of Coral John Mair and encourage providing support for people with disabilities.
